World AIDS Day – Awareness & Education | Apex Biotechnology Training and Research Institute, Chennai

Apex Biotechnology Training and Research Institute, Chennai proudly observes World AIDS Day (December 1) to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, support individuals living with the condition, and promote scientific understanding among students and the community. Since its inception in 1988, World AIDS Day has played an essential role in global health education and HIV prevention.

What is HIV?

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) weakens the immune system by attacking CD4 T cells, making the body vulnerable to infections. Without timely treatment, HIV can progress to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). Early testing and antiretroviral therapy (ART) enable individuals to lead healthy and productive lives.

How HIV Is Transmitted

HIV spreads through the exchange of infected bodily fluids. Common modes of transmission include:

  • Unprotected sexual contact
  • Sharing needles, syringes, or sharp instruments
  • Mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding
  • Unsafe blood transfusion (rare today due to strict screening)

HIV is NOT spread through: touching, hugging, sharing food, or mosquito bites.

Prevention of HIV

Effective HIV prevention includes:

  • Practising safe sex and using protection
  • Avoiding the sharing of needles or sharp objects
  • Regular HIV testing and early diagnosis
  • Using PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) when necessary
  • Ensuring proper medical guidance during pregnancy to prevent mother-to-child transmission

Treatment and Current Advances

Modern Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) helps control the virus, reduce viral load, and protect the immune system. Individuals on consistent ART can achieve an undetectable viral load, making transmission extremely unlikely (U=U: Undetectable = Untransmittable). Today’s HIV treatments are effective, safe, and accessible.

Future of HIV Research

Significant advancements are being made in HIV science, including:

  • Development of HIV vaccines
  • Long-acting injectable HIV treatments
  • Gene editing and CRISPR-based research
  • Strategies aimed at eliminating HIV reservoirs to achieve a functional cure

Apex supports and encourages awareness of these scientific developments among students and the research community.

Role of Citizens in Ending HIV

Everyone plays an important role in preventing HIV and supporting affected individuals:

  • Get tested and know your HIV status
  • Share accurate information and fight stigma
  • Encourage safe practices in your community
  • Support people living with HIV with compassion and understanding
  • Participate in educational and awareness activities
